Model Anganwadi Formats Compared | Saksham, Prefab

Saksham Anganwadi, prefab Nand-Ghar-style builds, BaLA refurbishment and modular POD centres compared on scope, timeline, funding route and fit.

Five model Anganwadi formats, side by side

“Model Anganwadi” means four different things depending on who is saying it. This page separates them, compares five formats on scope, timeline, funding route and fit, says when each one is the right answer, and reproduces the government specification in full.

It also states what Smart Anganwadi is and is not: a private implementation partner, not the Government of India scheme whose name it discusses.

Common questions

What is a model Anganwadi?
There is no single definition, which is exactly why comparisons get confused. In practice the phrase is used for at least four different things | an existing centre upgraded to the specification published under Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0, a brand-new centre built on an allotted plot to a repeated standard design, an existing centre repaired and given a Building as Learning Aid upgrade, and a factory-built modular unit dropped onto a prepared base. They differ in build type, cost, timeline, funding route and, most importantly, in which problem they actually solve. Settle which one you mean before you compare quotations, because the four are not variants of one price.
Is a model Anganwadi the same as a Saksham Anganwadi?
Not quite. Saksham Anganwadi is a named government programme with a published specification | under Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has approved upgradation of Anganwadi Centres located in government buildings, covering an LED screen, water filtration, a Poshan Vatika, ECCE material and BaLA painting. Model Anganwadi is a general description that people also apply to corporate greenfield builds, refurbishment projects and modular units, none of which are governed by that specification. If your sanction letter says Saksham, work to the published specification. If your brief just says model, decide which of the formats on this page you actually mean.
How does Smart Anganwadi compare with Nand Ghar or another named programme?
We deliberately do not publish a side-by-side against any named organisation’s programme. We hold no independently verified record of another organisation’s scope, cost, specification or results, and writing one from memory would be guesswork presented as research. What we can compare honestly is the format. If a named corporate programme is already in your brief, work out which column of the comparison table it corresponds to | usually the greenfield build or the modular unit | and then judge whether that format suits your sites, rather than judging the provider. We are a private, tech-enabled implementation and execution partner: we design, supply and execute against a scope that someone else has funded.
Which format costs the least per centre?
Refurbishment is the lowest of the build formats per centre and a new build is the highest, but the gap is site-specific rather than fixed. As an indicative planning range, published per-centre spend on Indian Anganwadi projects runs roughly from about Rs 2 lakh for light refurbishment to about Rs 14 lakh for a new build | that range is derived from other organisations’ publicly reported outlays divided by their published centre counts, and it is not a Smart Anganwadi price list. Your actual figure is quoted per site in writing after a condition assessment. The cost heads, the government norms and the sources behind that range are set out on our Anganwadi project cost page.
How long does each format take?
We do not publish fixed durations, because a duration that ignores site handover, approvals, access and the local monsoon window is a marketing number rather than a programme. What we can give you is the relative order. A learning-kit-only intervention is the shortest because nothing civil happens. Refurbishment is driven by the condition survey. A modular unit compresses the programme because the unit is produced off site while the base is prepared. A greenfield build is the longest, because site handover, approvals and the build sequence govern the dates. Committed dates appear only in the written quotation, after the site has been surveyed.
Can Smart Anganwadi fund our model Anganwadi, or help us get a government grant?
No. Smart Anganwadi does not provide grants, funding, loans or any assistance or government financial support, and we do not recruit Anganwadi workers or helpers. The funding comes from your CSR budget, a government sanction, or a funder or foundation. We are the execution partner: we design, supply and execute the work against that approved scope, and we supply the scope, milestones and utilisation records your committee or department needs.
Can one programme mix formats?
Yes, and in a district-wide programme it is usually the sensible answer. A block survey will typically produce a mix | sound buildings that need refurbishment, a smaller number that need replacing, and a few locations with no building at all. Mixing formats lets you match each site to the format that fits it instead of forcing one standard design onto every location. It does make documentation heavier, because each format carries its own scope, milestone set and evidence trail.
