What is BaLA wall painting, and how is it different from ordinary wall art?

BaLA stands for Building as Learning Aid | a design approach that treats the building’s own surfaces and elements as teaching resources rather than as decoration. The practical difference is testable: a BaLA element carries content the Karyakarta can teach from, it sits at the eye level and within the reach of a three-to-six-year-old, and it matches what that centre actually teaches. Cartoon characters painted near the ceiling look cheerful and teach nothing. If a supplier cannot tell you what a painted element is for and which age band uses it, it is wall art, not BaLA.

Can BaLA painting be procured on its own, or must it be part of a full renovation?

It can be procured on its own, and it often is, because it is a small, discrete scope that a CSR committee or a department can approve quickly. The one condition is the surface. If the plaster is failing or the wall is damp, painting alone is money spent twice | we will say so after the survey and either quote the preparation work first or exclude that surface in writing rather than paint over the problem.

What does BaLA painting for an anganwadi centre cost?

It is quoted either as a measured rate against the painted surface area, surface by surface, or as a per-centre figure once the elements have been listed. What moves the number is the condition of the surface before painting, interior versus exterior exposure, height and access, how many distinct elements and colours are involved, whether a protective coat is included, and the travel and logistics for the location. We do not publish a rate on this page because a centre with sound walls and a centre with damp walls are not the same job. Is the paint safe for children, and how long will it last?

We specify products the manufacturer declares free of added lead, with low-odour and low-VOC interior products where the room is in daily use, and washable finishes within a child’s reach. The product names, data sheets and manufacturer declarations go into the project file so the specification can be checked rather than taken on trust. On durability we do not quote a life in years here, because the surface underneath and the exposure decide it. The manufacturer’s stated performance for the specified product, and any warranty that applies, are written into your quotation.

Can the painted content be in our State language or in the children’s mother tongue?

Yes, and it should be. NIPUN Bharat places clear emphasis on the mother tongue in the foundational years, so the letters, numerals and words are set in the language the children at that centre actually speak and will learn to read, with the State language alongside where the department asks for it. The word list, script and numerals are approved in writing before painting starts.

Do you provide funding for BaLA painting, or anganwadi jobs?

No. Smart Anganwadi does not provide grants, funding, loans or any assistance or government financial support, and does not recruit Anganwadi Karyakartas, Sahayikas or supervisors | those appointments are made by the State department through its own process. We are a private execution and supply vendor, engaged by a company, foundation, NGO or department that already holds the funds for the work.
